Do you have to stay at a hotel if your going to a 3 day anime convention?

Gretta asked:

I might be going to the 3 day Minnesota anime convention, and i was wondering if i have to stay at the hotel they mentioned on the website, or can i just drive there everyday instead? This would be my first anime convention and i’m really excited! so thank you!

wow, i’m going to my first anime convention tomorrow too X) very very excited~~

i think you should just stay at the hotel.. it’d be easier to get to the convention, right? if you drive, you’ll have to keep in mind places to park, gas prices, etc.. hotel would probably be best c:

    have fun! :D

I’ve never been to an anime convention, but I’ve been to quite a few gaming conventions, and it’s probably a similar arrangement.

The hotel they mention on the website is just one at which they have reserved blocks of rooms. If the convention is held at the hotel, they probably get a special rate on the ballrooms and conference rooms the events are held in, based on how many hotel rooms the convention goers book.

As far as attending the convention, you don’t have to stay at that, or any, hotel. I’ll often stay at the convention hotel for convenience, even if the convention is close by. Even if it’s only half an hour or so away, that’s an hour of sleep each day, and I’m not as young as I used to be. Besides, the conventions are mini-vacations for me, so I don’t mind splurging on a hotel room.

Honestly I haven’t been to an Anime Con yet but I’m rather sure you don’t HAVE to stay at a Hotel. By the way, is it Kakkoi Con you are going to? If so I hope to see you there next year!

They are the best if you want to save time for commuting. If you live like 20 minutes away and you can drive there, then you don’t have to do the hotel room. But if you don’t wanna drive, live like an hour away, etc, then hotel is the best choice. Beside, with the hotel, you can attend panels that is late into the night.

And for the hotel that they mention on the website, go for it if you need the hotel. But ASAP since they get book up very quick. That is because the anime convention staff negotiate with the hotel people to have a good discount for you guys.

Also, with gas being high these days, it’s great to try to book up with some other people so you guys can split the hotel cost. Last time, the hotel room I stayed in had 11 people (2 big beds fitting 3 ppl each, a sofa bed fitting 3 people, and a big side couch fitting 2 people) and it was $45 per person. Not bad at all, considering that hotel also offer free breakfast.

Of course you can stay wherever you want. Search here for hotels near the convention:
