Minnesota accent?

Emily J asked:

Hey, so I am from MN, I wentto Florida this past month, as I was talking to the hotel manager about something for my room, this lady comes up andc omments on my accent. Now, I know t hat I do have one,but I don’t think I do sicne I am used to it,d o you think Minnesotans have an accent?
Please don’t make any refrences to Fargo. I know for a think I don’t say “Dontcha know.” Or “Yah Don’tcha know.” It’s annoying as hell.

Yes. It reminds me of the accents in the movie Fargo.

Nope, my best friend lives in Minnesota and I am from Texas. We know I have one but she certainly does not.

Eh, I really can’t tell because I have never left MN, so I don’t really know how everyone else talks. haha.

I think it is more noticeable among rural than urban folk, and among older than younger.

Oh my. My boyfriend works with a few Minnesotans and they sure as heck DO have an accent! It’s very strong, especially down here in Texas. Don’t you think that Southern folks have an accent? Well, so do y’all Northerners!

Yah, we do a little bit. I’m from Minneapolis, and I live in Mississippi now. We accent our vowels as a long sound (Minnesoooooda and bag rather than bahg) and we do sometimes end our sentences like we’re asking a question(?). And if you’re from nothern MN, it’s a little more Canadian. But, come on, Floridians have accents, too!

I think it is typical mid western accent with flat “a”s, and pronouncing water as “woter” etc.

I went to school in Minnesota from the south. Yes, there is a definite accent among most natives. What I thought was cute is that it is commom to hear ” borrow me five dollars.” They do not want you to actually go and borrow it; they want you to lend them five dollars. It is not as if they do not speak correct English, for Minnesota ranks high in academics nationwide.

being from minnesota born n raised that i was in oklahoma for 12 years and with family there also are from here that I didn’t notice anything but for the rest of the family when they moved there, they was a difference from what she was told. Once again I couldn’t tell. I’m guessing it all depends on the location you are in and the age of the people your talking to
