are there safe places to park a car nears new yorks hostels? And how much is the cost?
terri b asked:
I have an 18 year old son in new york right now. He and his 3 friend planned on staying in hostels, and had driven to the city from Minnesota. The driver was nervous as to where to park his car, so he phoned his parents whom have means and now they are paying a great deal for a for 4 star hotel that offered parking. Could they have found a hostile AND safe parking?

what do you mean by a hostile and safe parking? I have lived in New York City for the last 13 years. My experience is that: If you don’t want to get your car destroyed, toll away, or stolen, and if you intend to stay in the city (Manhattan) I would advise to pay a parking and preferably the one from your hotel. It is a nightmare to have a car in the city. Parking in the street is near impossible and risky. When you go to New York for vacation, you’ve got to be aware that it will not be a cheap vacation. I would have advised your son and his friends to leave the car at home, fly and find a place to stay in New York. The car is a very expensive luxury and a headache. So to answer to what I think is the question, Chances are they could not have found cheaper or if they did, they could be taking more risks…. I hope they have fun. It is the most amazing city in the world: New York
Of course! You have to pay for parking in a hotel anyway so they could have stayed in the hostel and paid for parking anywhere. That being said you don’t really get to park right where you are staying so no one knows whether your car is owned by someone staying in a hostel or a 5 star hotel whether its in a garage or on the street.
There are hostels all over the city, in midtown, upper east and west sides and downtown where street parking would be free. Finding a parking garage is easy wherever but the price varies by neighborhood and it would be about the same or cheaper than the hotel parking around $30-50 a day. There are people who park Lexus, BMWs, Mercedes, and even Porches on the street. If I had a 50-100K car I would probably spring for a garage but you can park in legal spots on the street, just watch the signs for alternate side parking and don’t leave valuables in the car but that should go without saying anywhere.
In manhattan? Well, there is street parking, that people from out of town have a hard time figuring out. Most likely a few $100 tickets will take care of that. But depending on the neighborhood, street parking is safe, but its sometimes hard to get. Paying for a parking spot can run 500-1000 a month in manhattan. If they are paying by the day, usually about 30-50 bucks.
To sum it up, the dollar difference in the tickets and damage that would most likely get done to the car, and the price for a garage, they are probably better off with a hotel that offers parking.
It costs more to park in most garages than it does to stay in a youth hostel. They aren’t going to be able to use the car in Manhattan - traffic’s a nightmare and then when you get to your destination, you have to pay for parking again. They should have left the car in a garage in New Jersey or Staten Island and picked up the car when they’re headed home.
You will not find any inexpensibe parking in the major areas on NYC, and virtually no free street paking. If I werre them I would try to find a garage closer to the earst or Hudson River, park the car, and leave it alone until they are ready to leave. Traveling by car is one of the worst ways to vist the City.. Its a great City for walking and using subways and public transportation
Have fun
